  3. [US] My job is taxing on my mental health, and I need a career change. Have you ever quit a job without another lined up in order to polish skills? How did it turn out for you?

I’m in my mid twenties in a creative field. I went to school for creative career A, which was sort of a passion pursuit, and have spent the past two years working in career B, which uses a lot of the same skills but is unfulfilling. Lately I’ve been interested in career C, which is kind of a combination of the two, and seems to have a lot of job postings in my area, but I would need time to learn some particular skills and make a portfolio before applying.

Thing is, I’m completely burnt out at my current job. My mental health has plummeted. I can’t even focus on my job tasks, let alone following the steps necessary to apply to the jobs I want. So, I’m thinking of putting my two week’s in and living off of savings while I focus on learning the skills I want, and job hunting. I have enough squirreled away to last about 6 months. But with everything going on in the world, doing this seems like a terrible idea.

Has anyone else been in a similar position? How did it work out for you?
